Identifying and controlling weeds to minimise their effects on yield.

What does this skill involve?

Activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Touring the farm to identify different weeds available in the farm
  • Preventing and controlling weeds
  • Conducting research on weed management
  • Conduct awareness activities
  • Setting regulations and policies on weed and invasive weed species management

Skill levels

Follows instructions to identify and control weeds.

Demonstrates basic knowledge on types of weeds and how to control them including chemical control.

Demonstrates knowledge of weed life cycles, growth and reproduction and provides instructions to others on control practices. Is able to choose appropriate chemical treatments. Can use a range of control methods correctly in cropping and non-cropping environments.

Assesses the cause and origin of weeds and takes appropriate actions to prevent new weed introduction and spread. Conducts capacity building and training on weed identification and control.

Has a good understanding of the threat weeds pose over a wide area, and has a working knowledge of the diseases they carry and pests they support. Develops materials for use on a large scale that facilitate weed identification and their control practices.

Organises horizon scanning and risk analysis on invasive weeds. Researches control methods of invasive weed and instigates plans to mitigate their arrival.

Provides national leadership on invasive weeds. Works with neighbouring regions/countries to limit their spread.
