Farmers’ Organisation Development

Facilitating farmers’ organisations that are able to effectively provide services to their members.

What does this skill involve?

Activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in organising farmer meetings
  • Assisting in establishing farmers’ organisation leadership
  • Facilitating in drafting organisation bylaws
  • Linking farmers’ organisations to institutions in charge of registering organisations
  • Enhancing farmers’ knowledge and skills about agriculture technologies and business activities
  • Building the capacity of farmers’ organisations leadership
  • Facilitating partnership development to build strong farmers’ organisation

Skill levels

Level 2 - Assist

Helps to organise farmers’ organisation events.

Level 3 - Apply

Runs awareness events to mobilise farmers for self organisation. Facilitate farmers’ meetings and provides them with accurate information of the laws and regulations regarding farmers’ organisations. Provides initial and basic capacity building to strengthen the capacity of farmers’ organisations.

Level 4 - Enable

Plans and conducts capacity building with farmers’ organisation leaders and members, to encourage effective management and continuous growth. Facilitates understanding and conflict resolution among members. Advocates and facilitates collaboration among farmers’ organisations.

Level 5 - Ensure, Advise

Ensures that farmers’ organisations operate in a well organised manner. Advises on the regulations and support provided to farmers’ organisations. Participates in monitoring and evaluation of farmers’ organisations to ensure their effectiveness in providing services to members. Implements policies for the growth and professionalism of farmers’ organisations. Facilitates the preparation of important documents such as the organisation constitution, bylaws and business plan. Facilitates the legal registration of the organisation.

Level 6 - Initiate, Influence

Evaluates policies and strategies around farmers’ organisations. Initiates national and international collaboration among farmers’ organisations. Influences strategies and policies to build competitive farmers’ organisations. Conducts thorough monitoring and evaluation of organisations to ensure they respond and provide good services to members.

Level 7 - Set strategy, Inspire, Mobilise

Sets strategies and policies to develop competitive and successful farmers’ organisations. Provides overall guidance on development and capacity building of organisations. Leads the development of new practices that could have a potential impact on farmers’ organisations and their members. Ensures that all stakeholders work together to provide a better environment for farmers’ cooperative development.
