What does this skill involve?
Activities may include but are not limited to:
- Preparing the land before planting
- Sampling and testing the soil for important physical, biological and chemical properties
- Controlling soil erosion in farm lands
- Planning the land use and farming methods
- Production of soil information maps
- Setting policies and strategies of soil management and land husbandry
Skill levels
Level 1 - Follow
Able to follow instructions to till, plough, do farm erosion control and other basic soil management practices.
Level 2 - Assist
Assists the application of soil management practices. Understands basic practices of soil and land management to keep the soil healthy and productive.
Level 3 - Apply
Applies soil management practices following soil characteristics, information and management history. Assists in recording soil management practices history.
Level 4 - Enable
Identifies soil management information that enables decisions on best practices. Provides guidance on how to apply soil management practices. Write reports on observations and effectiveness of the soil management practices applied on the farm. Collates lessons learned from previous practices and applies them whilst making decisions on which practices to adopt.
Level 5 - Ensure, Advise
Develops soil management and land husbandry plans on the farm. Ensures that required equipment is available. Recommends proper and efficient soil management practices based on reports and previous lessons learned.
Level 6 - Initiate, Influence
Provides executive leadership and reinforces adoption of soil management practices on a large scale. Influences wider strategies and policies on soil management and land husbandry initiatives. Evaluates key factors relating to the implementation and review of strategies and policies. Assesses the status and future of soil’s capacity and management to keep it healthy and productive.
Level 7 - Set strategy, Inspire, Mobilise
Sets large scale soil management and land husbandry strategies. Works with partners and mobilises resources for efficient implementation of soil management strategies and policies.
