Skill levels

Carries out simple water management practices following instructions provided.

Assists in setting up a simple irrigation system. Operates simple irrigation systems under supervision. Performs simple water management practices such as irrigation, drainage, erosion control, and water harvesting.

Identifies water management problems and applies irrigation principles to sustainably increase crop performance. Able to select from a range of irrigation systems.

Demonstrates expertise in irrigation and farm water management. Sets different irrigation systems in the farm according to crop and water requirements. Provides capacity building on irrigation and farm water management techniques, use, laws and regulations. Designs irrigation and water management systems for local applications. Can assess water quality and run an irrigation system taking into account soil flocculation and other aspects of soil structure.

Advises on new irrigation projects that respond to needs and observed challenges. Conducts studies and needs assessments on water management and irrigation facilities in an area. Work with stakeholders to address complex water related challenges. Advises on setting laws and regulations on water management to facilitate equity and efficient use and management of resources. Facilitates the establishment of local water user organisations. Develops extension materials on best practices in irrigation and farm water management.

Provides large-scale technical leadership on matters related to irrigation and water management. Coordinates experts who conduct assessment for new or existing projects. Initiates and facilitates partnerships to develop new infrastructure projects. Initiates regulations for agriculture water management.

Mobilises resources for large-scale water management infrastructure projects. Drives large-scale strategies, policies and practices for the efficient use and management of agricultural water. Negotiates with regard to water use from international rivers.
